Volunteer Opportunities

Adult volunteers make Horizons GFA possible! They help with on-campus events such as Fall Fest in October, Book Drives for Literacy in January, and other events for our students from PreK–College. We always welcome volunteers to help students in our High School & College Programs as individual coaches and career mentors.

Volunteers also create our incredible fundraiser events: The Horizons GFA Open at Country Club of Fairfield each June and our Annual Fall Gala each November.

High School volunteers play a valuable role in our PreK-8 Program by setting a positive example for students at all times and assisting classroom teachers with a variety of activities during:

•  Saturday Academy: 5 Saturday mornings in the spring, 1 in the fall.
•  Summer Academy: 6 weeks (choice between two three-week sessions or the full six weeks) over the summer, starting in late June.

A successful Horizons GFA volunteer is mature, shows restraint, good judgment, and has a cheerful, warm personality. They work well with others and are able to take both guidance and initiative in the classroom. Horizons GFA volunteers both like and relate well to children, and possess the desire and skills necessary to work with them: patience, kindness, tolerance, adaptability, and the ability to creatively problem-solve. 

• Academics: Volunteers help students individually or in small groups; prepare materials for classroom activities, monitor specific activities as assigned by classroom teacher.
• Enrichment: Volunteers monitor students in all enrichment activities (sports, music, science, art, swimming, etc.) and on field trips, actively engaging with students in the activity as appropriate.

Most events and Saturday Academy require signing up; to become a summer volunteer, an application is required and is available from March 1-May 15 on this website.
