High School volunteers play a valuable role in our PreK-8 Program by setting a positive example for students at all times and assisting classroom teachers with a variety of activities each day. Volunteers work during Saturday Academy, which is five Saturday mornings in the spring and one special event in the fall, and during Summer Academy, which is six weeks over the summer starting in late June. During the summer volunteers work either all six weeks or can choose between the first three weeks or the second three weeks. Volunteering in the summer is full day, 8:15am-3:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Volunteers help students individually or in small groups; prepare materials for classroom activities, and monitor specific activities as assigned by the classroom teacher. Volunteers also monitor students during all enrichment activities (sports, music, science, art, swimming, etc.) and on field trips, actively engaging with students as appropriate.
A successful Horizons GFA volunteer is mature, shows restraint and good judgment, and has a cheerful, warm personality. They work well with others and can take both guidance and initiative in the classroom. Horizons GFA volunteers both like and relate well to children, and possess the desire and skills necessary to work with them: patience, kindness, tolerance, adaptability, and the ability to creatively problem-solve.
