Horizons GFA Students Go The Distance
For the last 25 years, HGFA has offered Bridgeport public school students learning opportunities to reverse impacts caused by educational inequities and opportunity gaps. Our tuition-free, evidence-based enrichment programs are structured to meet the unique academic and social-emotional needs of each participating student. At admission, two-thirds of our students are below grade level, but over the years, our students show predictable and reproducible results:

Horizons GFA’s innovative, self-funded program provides access and opportunity to underserved students. Horizons emphasizes academics, social-emotional earning (SEL) and character development, and exposes students to a variety of social, cultural and recreational enrichment experiences in science, the arts, and athletics.
- 100% of K-8 classrooms show no class-wide learning loss in reading and math, and they achieve overall growth rates of at least three months in each subject area.
- 100% of students entering the program in PreK or Kindergarten are at grade level in reading by the start of the 4th grade.
- 100% of students entering the program in PreK, Kindergarten, or 1st grade are swim-proficient by the end of their 7th grade summer.
- 80% of students make statistically significant growth in tracked SEL skills over the summer session.
- 100% of HGFA high school students graduate in four years.
- 95% of HGFA students meet or exceed the College Board’s new standard for “College Ready” in math and reading.
- 100% of students graduating from high school enroll in college or other post-secondary program with fewer than 5% of students requiring remedial coursework before matriculation.
- 90% of participants in the College Program remain on track to graduate within six years, and 100% of students participating in the Career Success Program are either employed or in graduate school in their field of interest within one year of graduation.
