PreK-8 Faculty Positions
Our teachers are an essential part of the Horizons GFA team. Teachers coordinate with a co-teacher, intern, and classroom volunteers in leading groups of 18-22 students and accomplish the following:
- Create a safe, student-centered learning environment that fosters student inquiry.
- Implement a prescribed Math and ELA curriculum through challenging and engaging lessons.
- Implement activities in the joint HGFA/Harvard Graduate School of Education-developed custom SEL curriculum to foster self-esteem, social skills and other core SEL competencies.
- Scaffold and adapt lesson plans to meet the individual needs of each student.
- Administer appropriate assessment tools, such as STAR Reading and Math.
- Engage with parents on student progress and needs.
- Communicate appropriately, professionally, and effectively with fellow staff.
- Be present every day during the summer program and Saturday Academy sessions.
- Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings and training sessions.
Faculty Hiring
Our teacher retention is quite high, but we usually have open positions for spring and summer that are filled in the winter. New teachers start during the five sessions of Spring Saturday Academy and continue through the six-week summer program. Specific information about openings will be posted on this page starting in January.
Qualifications
Successful candidates meet the following criteria:
- Have a passion for the Horizons GFA mission and an unwavering belief in the power of education and the potential in all young Bridgeport students.
- Have strong instructional and classroom management skills.
- Have a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
- Have two years of lead teaching experience and a long-term commitment to teaching.
- Are available during all Saturday Academy and Summer Academy program dates.

Teaching Intern
Horizons at GFA hires college students (education majors preferred but not required) and graduating high school seniors with significant Horizons volunteer experience to work with PreK to 8th-grade students in an intensive six-week summer program held on the GFA campus. Teaching Interns are responsible for assisting teachers with planning and implementing academic curricula, enrichment activities, swim instruction, student monitoring, transitions, and field trips.
Teaching Intern Characteristics:
- Mature individuals with a demonstrated record of dedication, professionalism, and reliability.
- Possess the skills necessary to work with children: patience, kindness, compassion, tolerance, adaptability, and problem-solving ability.
- Willing and able to actively participate in all academic and enrichment activities while being a positive role model for our students.
- Available to be present every day during the summer program.
- An interest in the field of education is a plus but not required.
Teaching Intern Role:
- Help create a positive culture infused with social-emotional learning (SEL) teaching principles.
- Take the initiative in the classroom to support active learning.
- Assist teachers in planning lessons and activities.
- Teach, facilitate, and find resources for small groups of students.
- Supervise and participate when appropriate during enrichment activities (swimming, art, science, etc.).
- Establish a positive relationship with students, supervising teachers, and classroom volunteers.
To be eligible for the position of Teaching Intern, you must:
- Believe in the mission of Horizons at GFA.
- Hold an unwavering belief in the power of education and the potential in all young people from Bridgeport.
- Be on a college track that demonstrates a commitment to serving children.
- Have had prior experience working with students in an educational setting.
- Be available full days, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 3:30 pm, for all six weeks during the summer session as well as the week prior for training and orientation.

High School Program Academic Coach
Horizons GFA employs dedicated individuals to serve as academic coaches for Horizons GFA high school and college students. Academic coaches meet weekly with their high school students during the school year in our Bridgeport office, and monthly or as needed with college students. They serve as a tutor, mentors, advocates, and trusted adults for their students and frequently remain with the same student from 9th grade through college.
