High School Volunteers
High School volunteers play a valuable role at Horizons by assisting
classroom teachers with a variety of activities that include:
- Academic: Classroom Volunteers help students individually or in small groups; prepare materials for classroom activities, monitor specific activities as assigned by classroom teacher.
- Enrichment: Classroom and Enrichment Volunteers monitor students in all enrichment activities (sports, music, science, art, swimming, etc.) and on field trips, actively engaging with students in the activity where appropriate. Volunteers are required to help in the pool during swim lessons.
- General: set a positive example for all students at all times; assist in cafeteria as needed during breakfast and lunch; monitor and engage with students during recess, at sports, during transitions, on bus, during swimming and on field trips.
The characteristics of a successful Horizons GFA volunteer include maturity, restraint, good judgment, and a cheerful, warm personality. They need to work well with others and be able to take both direction and initiative in a classroom. In addition, applicants should like and relate well to children as well as possess the desire and skills necessary to work with them: patience, kindness, tolerance, adaptability, and the ability to creatively problem-solve.
Students currently in 9th grade and older are eligible to volunteer at Saturday and Summer Academy. To be placed on our volunteer list, simply email gro.ymedacafg@egdelturm; once on the list, you will be notified about all volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. GFA upper school students can also join the Horizons GFA Club by emailing Mr. Jackson, gro.ymedacafg@noskcajj.
PreK-8 Summer Session 2024 Volunteer Positions
Our summer session is six weeks long, June 24–August 1. Volunteers work either all six weeks, the first three weeks, or the second three weeks. The deadline to apply to be a summer volunteer was May 15, 2024, and the first three weeks are full, but if you are interested in volunteering the second three weeks (July 15-August 1; daily from 8:15am-3:30pm), please email Monique Rutledge at gro.ymedacafg@egdelturm to request an application. Students must be entering 10th grade in fall 2024 or older to volunteer.
Adult Volunteers
Adult volunteers make Horizons GFA possible! Our volunteers help with on-campus events such as Fall Fest in October, Book Drives for Literacy in January, and other year-round events for our students from PreK–College. We always welcome volunteers to help students in our High School & College Programs as individual coaches and career mentors.
Volunteers also create our incredible fundraiser events: The Horizons GFA Open at Country Club of Fairfield (June 3, 2024) and our Annual Fall Gala (November 14, 2024).
Join an event committee now, or volunteer with our students!
