One of our Horizons high school students, sophomore Hector Gonzalez, earned 1st place in the Law Day Essay Contest sponsored by the Greater Bridgeport Bar Association. Hector’s essay was chosen from among many entries for the $500 grand prize. The award was presented by the Honorable Barbara N. Bellis of the Fairfield Judicial District Superior Court. It comes as no surprise that apart from his excellent writing skills, Hector has also excelled academically and has been nominated to become a member of the National Honor Society at Central Magnet High School. Throughout the academic school year, Hector has maintained an “A” average and works hard in all that he does. Congratulations to Hector for this amazing accomplishment, keep up the great work. We are very proud of you!

In our third year of career exploration workshops, last week our high school sophomores had the amazing opportunity to speak with the author of The BIGS, Mr. Ben Carpenter. The BIGS is a career readiness tool that outlines the secrets to success beyond high school. In The BIGS, Mr. Carpenter helps educate, motivate and excite students to take the first step in formulating their career interests, goals, and what it will take to get to the The Big Leagues after high school. Prior to meeting with Mr. Carpenter, students participated in a six-week workshop guided by the book and discovered that it’s never too early to plan for their future. This is the second year Mr. Carpenter has worked with Horizons GFA high school students, who shared with Mr. Carpenter what they’ve learned so far to refine their career aspirations since the last workshop. Our students presented Mr. Carpenter with a binder filled with incredible student essays about their aspirations, for which he was incredibly grateful. We are excited for his next visit in 2019!
