Dear Horizons GFA Community:
We have received many inquiries from our community members about how Horizons GFA is responding to the COVID-19 outbreak, and how they can help.
This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone, but especially our Horizons GFA families, many of whom do not have access to childcare and other resources during school and business closures. We will continue to communicate frequently with families to ensure they are aware of all community updates, closures, meal availability, and what we can offer. Below, please see how we are constantly working to ensure our students do not fall behind in school during these next weeks, and instead, continue to grow.
How is Horizons GFA responding to COVID-19?
PreK–8 Program: We are providing families and students with supplemental virtual learning plans as well as daily schedules and routines, to continue engaging their minds while school is closed. In addition, our Academic Team is available to help students complete any BPS assignments and advise parents on how to schedule their “schoolwork time” at home. We have distributed dozens of iPads, laptops and hotspots to our families and will continue to provide technology as required. We will connect parents and Horizons teachers via Zoom as necessary. These steps will allow students to engage with online resources and programs as well as occupy time when parents are busy!
High School Program: Academic coaches are meeting with their students virtually. They continue to utilize the SEL curriculum provided by Harvard, in addition to supporting students academically and helping them plan for productive summers that include volunteer, work, and study opportunities. The High School and College Program team will also check in with students and families to determine any further supports that might be needed.
College Program: As most colleges have moved to virtual learning for the rest of the academic year, Horizons staff will be connecting via phone with each student to develop a plan for accessing reliable WiFi and a quiet work environment. The Director of the High School and College Programs will also work with students to apply for summer opportunities. Academic coaches who regularly meet with college students will continue to do so virtually.
How has Horizons GFA prepared for the summer?
We are fully enrolled and ready to go for this summer! After conducting new applicant interviews in February, we welcomed the new and returning families joining us this year. We have hired all teaching staff and are well on our way to finalizing our Intern team. With your support, all the key elements are in place and we are ready to deliver another excellent summer program.
Thank you!
While this is a time of great uncertainty, your support has allowed us to be ready to assist our students and families as needed in this situation. Additional updates will be sent in the coming weeks, along with any resource help we may need. We thank you for all you do for Horizons GFA, and please do not hesitate to reach out with ideas, questions, or any other thoughts.
Wishing you the best of health!
The Horizons GFA Team
